Johji Yamamoto’s work is characterised by a deep interest in textiles: their ability to ’embody’ a garment, thei ability to lend strenght to a fragile frame, their ability to allow the shape of the wearer to be imprinted on them, their ability to age gracefully.



Yohji Yamamoto (Japanese: ⼭山 本 耀 司, Yamamoto Yōji) (born in Yokohama, 3 October 1943) is a Japanese fashion designer, debuted in Paris in 1981, is one of the most renowned names in the international design scene and one of the most influential and enigmatic fashion designers of the past forty years.

While the unique philosophy and distinctive style of the man behind the eponymous brand is the fairy tale of the legend, over the years, the Japanese fashion designer, who prefers to call himself “tailor”, earned some of the most coveted design prizes in the world : the Chevalier of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon, the Ordre national du Mérite, the Royal Designer for Industry and the Master of Design award by Fashion Group International.

Y’s is designer Yohji Yamamoto’s very first brand (1977 Tokyo collection debut) and to this day it bears his vision and philosophy. Since 2003, is Yohji Yamamoto also responsible for the Production Line Y-3 for the Adidas brand.

He also made designs for other fashion brands such as Hermès and Mandarina Duck. In 2007 his work was exhibited at the Fashion Museum in Antwerp. Yamamoto’s daughter Limi Yamamoto is also a fashion designer with the line Limi Feu with a first show at the end of October 2007 in Paris. As the son of a tailor, he studied law at Keio University. He then followed a fashion course at the Bunka College in Tokyo.



Yohji Yamamoto DRESSMAKER is an intimate portrait of the life and work of Yohji Yamamoto. The film sets out to discover and uncover the many layers of the man, delving into the fascinatingly complex life story of this iconic and visionary 73 year-old Japanese craftsman.

In addition to its designer fashion pieces Yohji Yamamoto, launched its own eyewear line in 2015. The optical and sunglass line are very loyal to the strong tradition of the label and meet the highest quality standards to deserve trademark YY-name.
